Should you really take your money out of the banks?

Direct answer

No, not all of it, and not carelessly. Bank deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000 per depositor and per institution, repayable within seven working days (Article 8 of Directive 2014/49/EU). Beyond that threshold, and for anything that is not a deposit, diversifying the form and location of part of your wealth is a legitimate defensive move.

01 · To understandWhat does "taking your money out of the banks" really mean?

Taking part of your money out of the banks therefore does not mean breaking up with your bank.

02 · The foundationWhat does the deposit guarantee protect, and how far?

In Belgium, as across the European Union, deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000 per depositor and per institution, repayable within seven working days: that is what Article 8 of Directive 2014/49/EU lays down1. The exact scope, the deadline and the particular cases are detailed on the dedicated page of sortirdesbanques.be.

03 · The contextWho is asking this question, and why now?

Asking the question is therefore neither a symptom nor an act of rupture. It is wealth hygiene, in the same way as spreading investments or rereading insurance contracts.

04 · The methodWhere to start, concretely?

1. Spread money across several banks

Stay below the €100,000 ceiling per institution and per person.

2. Diversify the form and the location

A fraction of your wealth can take a tangible form, kept outside the balance sheet of any bank. This is where physical gold traditionally enters the scene, and the question of its custody is treated in detail in our page on owning gold without keeping it at home.

05 · The literal senseAnd for physical valuables, what does "taking out" mean?

For tangible valuables (precious metals, documents, digital media), taking out of the banks has a literal meaning: placing them in a vault room that belongs to no bank. In 2012, Gold & Silver Company opened the first private safe deposit vaults outside the banking system in Belgium, in Dottignies (Mouscron)3: four box sizes from 240 to 350 euros a year, a non-nominative formula at 10 euros a month, with no bank account, on simple presentation of an identity document. The detail of this model is the subject of our page on gold kept away from home, and that of digital keys of our page on crypto wallets in a private safe deposit box.

Framework. For any significant wealth decision, speak to a notary, a lawyer or a tax adviser.

Taking your money out of the banks is therefore neither a duty nor a folly: it is a slider. A proportionate decision rests on legal limits, liquidity needs and verifiable risks, without alarmist scenarios.
